QWIPU R2013Q1 (data through 2012:2) available for download

The most recent QWIPU data for all participating LED states are available for download from our download server. The release R2013Q1 covers data through 2012:2, for 47 states and the District of Columbia. The following states were missing in previous releases, and are now included again: Colorado (CO) and North Carolina (NC). Missing are Florida (FL) and Oregon (OR) due to temporary data quality issues, and Massachusetts (MA), which has not yet provided data to the Census Bureau. In general, each state’s version.txt file points to the last updated quarter. Each data file contains the complete historical time series for each state, up through the latest quarter. Data can be downloaded (without registration) immediately at http://www.vrdc.cornell.edu/qwipu/R2012Q4/. The SAS versions of the data on the Social Science Gateway have already been updated. Information on the variable coding is available in the QWI “cheatsheet”.

The release also contains updates to the beta release of Quarterly Workforce Indicator (QWI) files containing augmented tabulations by firm size and by firm age. Data are available within each state’s BETA directory. New are these data for California (CA). For more details on this release, please consult our earlier release notice. These files are released to garner feedback from users, and certain caveats apply. Beta releases are nearly feature complete, but may not have been created using the final methodology or quality metrics. Please provide the LEHD program and/or us with any feedback you may have on these files.

These are the last data in the QWI Format V3.4. The new format, which the Census Bureau describes here, was developed with inputs from us and the user community. Starting with R2013Q2, all files will be posted in this new format.

[SSG] Release of QWI R2013Q1 on compute nodes

We have made the SAS versions of the QWI R2013Q1 is now available on the compute nodes, under /data/clean/qwipu/state/data.R2013Q1.Note that MA is not yet available, and FL and OR did not deliver data to the Census Bureau in R2013Q1 (R2012Q4 will be made available shortly). The data will be made available for download within the next couple of days.

Tables available are {se,rh,wia}_{county,metro}_{naicssec,naics3}_{all,pri}. The beta FA and FS by {WIA,RH,SE} may be made available later – interested users can create extracts from the CSV files.

NBER-CES Manufacturing Industry Database updated on SDS and SSG

NBER and the U.S. Census Bureau recently released an updated version of the NBER-CES Manufacturing Industry Database. Their webpage provides more details, and their announcement is listed after the break.

The database is of particular utility to users of the SynLBD. An earlier version (provided directly to Lars Vilhuber by Randy Becker) was present on our servers previously – the new version has replaced that version on both servers.

Dear Researchers:

We are happy to announce that an update to the NBER-CES Manufacturing Industry Database is now available, covering 1958-2009. This database is a joint effort between the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Center for Economic Studies (CES), containing annual industry-level data on output, employment, payroll and other input costs, investment, capital stocks, TFP, and various industry-specific price indexes. The database covers all manufacturing industries and is available in two versions: by 1987 SIC codes (459 industries) and by 1997 NAICS codes (473 industries).

The data and documentation are available on the NBER website at www.nber.org/data/nberces5809.html.

Please note that the definition of the manufacturing sector changed in 1997, when the industry classification system shifted from SIC to NAICS, so that several industries are in manufacturing under one definition and not the other. Those industries’ observations are missing for either 1958-1996 or 1997-2009. A translation table between SIC and NAICS industries is also available on the NBER website, along with detailed documentation of these and other issues related to the dataset.

The end of SSG is approaching

Dear SSG users:

the compute resources that you have been using are financed by NSF Grant SES-0922005. The grant will end on June 30, 2013.

We are preparing the final report, and applying for continuing funding of some or all resources beyond that date. We request that all current users provide us with any publications that used the SSG resources as part of their inputs. This will help us compile a complete and comprehensive final report.

At the present time, in the absence of continued funding of our operating costs, we cannot guarantee availability beyond June 30, 2013. If no funding source is identified, we will be winding down the resources in July 2013. As we get closer to June, we will let you know of any new developments.

Rest assured that your data, your programs, and your results will remain available for some time beyond that date.

New account creations are suspended as of April 1, 2013.

The Synthetic Data Server (SDS) is funded through a different grant. For now, SDS users are not affected by this message.

Network maintenance on SSG/SDS 4/2/2013 at 5am
