Implementation of QWI access and download at CISER

Since 2002, the Cornell Restricted Access Data Center (CRADC) has provided access to the full set of Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) on its compute servers. The cost associated with this access were funded through NSF grant SES-9978093. The grant ended in September 2005, but we have continued to provide access to existing and new users.

Since January 2007, CRADC is no longer approving new projects. The most current version of the data is being moved to a new server that is part of the VirtualRDC (see http://vrdc.ciser.cornell.edu for information on the VirtualRDC) for general download access, and new users will be directed to that site. Users can also purchase DVDs from the U.S. Census Bureau directly. Existing users can continue to work on the CRADC until May 31, 2007. At that time, all direct access will be stopped. Users may request that results be sent to them using the usual channels specified in their user agreements.

The VirtualRDC continues to provide access to large compute servers. However, the compute environment is significantly different from CRADC: servers run Linux, and statistical software is limited to SAS, Stata, OpenOffice Calc, and lower-level programming languages such as Fortran and R. More information can be obtained at http://www.vrdc.cornell.edu/news/welcome/. A tutorial on how to access the VirtualRDC is provided at http://www.vrdc.cornell.edu/guides/how-to-use-VirtualRDC/. Those who wish to use other software should make arrangements to download the QWI data directly from the VirtualRDC to their local computing environment.
