Installing and Using NX Player

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

While these instructions have been tested on a variety of laptops and comptuers, not all configurations have been observed. Please send us information about successful installations (stating platform and other circumstances) to ecco-help@cac.cornell.edu.

Choosing versions

The description below describes how to install the Nomachine (or "NX") v5 client. (Installation of the older NX Client 3.5 is obsolete). Users should NOT install the Nomachine v6 client.

Download the free enterprise client

Do NOT download clients from the Nomachine page. They will not work! Please use the download links on this page.

Install it. Disable the auto-update functionality.

Download the pre-configured configuration

Now download the desired pre-configured config files:

(only one! NX does not seem to allow for multiple configurations for the same host) and unpack the ZIP file into the NX config location (you can find this in the NX4 configuration as "Connections" directory)

  • $HOME/.nx/config (Linux) or $HOME/Documents/NoMachine/
  • /Users/[user_name]/Documents/NoMachine/ (Mac)
  • Documents/NoMachine/ (Windows 7, 8, 10)

(You may need to enable "view hidden files option" for your operating system). You can configure this to be in a different directory if you wish, by modifying the NX4 settings.

Connecting with the NX client

The session installed as noted above should now show up in the initial NX window:

nx4-step1
If the session does NOT show up here, then you may need to "import" it. It is NOT possible to self-configure the session.
Double-clicking on the session will start it. Accept the key dialog:
nx4-step2
Log in with your ECCO login id and password:
nx4-step3
You may get the following prompt, which you can safely click OK for:
nx4-step5

Customization options

The NX client has several options that can be set once a session is active. To find them, use the "peel" menu in the top-right corner (default location) and click on it:
