Recently installed new software on VRDC6401: Summary

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

We recently integrated a developer kit for our version of Linux, that made available to us several software packages that had previously been missing (for many users, painfully missing) from the OS on VRDC6401. Among other packages, we

  • installed Xemacs, which has a slightly different functionality than GNU Emacs. Users can now choose according to their preferences.
  • installed LaTeX, which allows for the creation of scientific articles, or parts thereof, directly on the VirtualRDC
  • installed image manipulation programs, which might come in handy for some of the geographical applications, or when transforming graphs between applications (f.i., exporting graphics from SAS and importing them into LaTeX).
  • updated versioning software, in particular installing the latest version of Subversion. More information on Subversion at the VirtualRDC can be found elsewhere on this site.
  • installed more mathematical libraries, although you might want to check, since typically, these vendor-provided libraries lag significantly behind the most recent available versions.

Please let us know if you find something missing. Please note that all software installed here can also be installed in the RDC environment, but may not be installed. If you do request installation, please let us here at the VirtualRDC know as well.

Note: for technical users, the above packages became available through the integration of the SDK for SLES9, Service Pack 2.
